      Hi all

I have just replaced a second exhaust elbow on my B34(2000) , 19hp 2020 VP. There is elsewhere on this forum a convoluted story about how the problem of low power and revs was eventually traced to the elbow that was full of rock-hard carbon. It was replaced with a new one.

This time I went straight to the elbow and it was full of carbon again after 3 1/2 years.

My theory is that the saltwater, through heat exchanger, is pumped straight onto the hot exhaust pipe in the elbow and eventually punches a hole through it and then the elbow quickly fill with carbon. The performance of the motor fell off very quickly.

I think a stainless fabricator may be able to come up with a better solution that could be disassembled ocassionally to remove any carbon build up.

Has anyone else had a similat problem.

          Hi Ed

Yes! I think it is the same problem.
On the 2020 the riser has a cone inside it so that the water from the heat exchanger is not squirted directly into the exahust. The water spreads around the cone and is then pulled into the exhaust flow by the exhaust pressure.

My risers have been full with rock hard carbon deposits which have also got into the cone. I think it would be impossible to do any “rodding” inside the cone as it is a tight fit. I have heard of the soaking solution but I am doubtful that it would work on the rock hard carbon.

I am going to talk to a stainless steel fabricator to see it is may be worthwhile having something made where the other shell can screw off exposing the cone.

          Will keep you informed.

          Greg
