Use a clear plastic soft tube with a rope down the centre.

Tie the rope forward somewhere, toerail hole or stanchion base. Push the tube as far forward as possible and tie a knot (to stop the hose moving). Then hang the tube down the side of the hull until it is at the widest beam, pass the aft end of the rope through a toerail hole or stanchion base and tie a knot. The tube is then hanging along the side to protect the hull. When not in use, pull the aft end sharply and the hose will rise to the toerail and if lucky will sit inside the toerail or between the toerail and stanchion bases. I used this method for years when picking up lines from posts when fenders dont work.

Good tip, Keith – practical and simple. I’ll try this on Freebird!
