Not taking th p*** – have you tested the electrical conection for a short?

Alternately has the sender unit got “wedged” by some floating debris?

Try closing the cock and filling the tank with fresh water before taking the boat ‘around the block – to shake things up.
Empty out the contents and with any luck you make have cleared it.
