Anyone out there with some advice on how to deal with what at first sight appears to be a surface rusting of the taps and shower fittings?

I say at first sight because the same build up is also present on the plastic parts? (And no it is not just dust or dirt)

I guess it must have something to do with moisture in the air, so again… any hint or tips on using a dehumidifier? There appears to be schools of thoughts from what I can find – Love and Loathe. Everything from fire risk and underwater electrolytic reaction to best thing since sliced bread.

So what are your thoughts?

How best to deal with it?
How best to prevent it?
