I removed various lines for washing the other day and now have to refit them. Things like the kicker and mainsheet were attached to the block by a knot that I didn’t recognise, but it seems to be the standard method employed by Opal’s rigger for such things. The nearest thing I could find in a reference knot book was a buntline hitch but it has an extra turn. I’ve done my best to replicate the knot and it seems to work. Has anyone ever heard of a double buntline hitch, or am I missing something completely?

It looks a little similar but the stevedore knot is a stopper knot.

I finally found the answer, in the Selden rigging and tuning handbook. It’s a “halyard knot”. Something like a buntline hitch but a bit more secure I think. The “double buntline hitch” seems to have been purely a figment of my own imagination.
