      Over many years sailing I have learnt that you shopuld never rely on s/s shackles. Check for crevice corrosion regularly. Look very carefully for tiny holes in the stainless steel. Put a pin in and you will find large cavities! Next step complete failure. I check my shackles every year.

      This applies to 316 stainless also. It corrodes more slowly but does corrode.

      Check your backstay shackles now!

        Many thanks Keith – good advice. I was surprised how easily ours failed on a cat A boat just 3 years old!
